What Type of Paper Should I Use for My Book?

by Joshua Prizer

It's a tough question to answer, and one I hear all the time: Which paper stock should I choose for my book? And although it's a tough question, it is an important one because the paper you choose will tell your potential buyer what kind of book this is. Go too cheap, you might lose some buyers to a different title. Go too expensive, you just wasted your money.

First-time publishers need to understand the difference between the paper they purchase at an office supply store versus what is used by a professional printing plant. While paper weights at an office supply store are measured as "bond," printing plants use a different measurement called "offset." I won't get into the details of why bond and offset weights are different for the same type of paper, but just know that if you multiply a bond weight by 2.5, you get the offset weight. For example, the 24# bond paper you purchase at Office Max is the same thickness as a 60# offset sheet used by your printer.

Typically, I would recommend that for a standard book with just black text (no color) and not a lot of images, 50# offset is just fine. If there are a lot of graphics in the book, you might want to bump up to 60# offset to eliminate some see-through from one side of the page to the other.

Don't assume that the 20# bond paper you saw at Office Depot is going to be identical to the 50# offset paper you asked your printer to use. It won't be. Different paper manufacturers produce their papers with different brightness, different opacity, etc. So always ask for paper samples from your printer.

Children's books or coffee table books that are printed in full color need a different paper stock than black & white books. You'll want to think about whether to bump up to a glossy stock to make your pictures really shine on the paper. If you don't like the glare of a glossy sheet, ask your printer if they have any matte coated stocks that would bring out the color of your images without the extra sheen.

Most full color books are printed overseas, where a different standard of paper measurement is used - grams per square meter (gsm). To calculate gsm, multiply the offset weight by approximately 1.5. So an 80# gloss sheet in the U.S. would be the same as a 120 gsm sheet overseas. You'll definitely want a thicker paper stock for your color book versus a black & white book.

I'll say it again: Samples, samples, samples. Don't be shy about asking your printer for paper samples. It's probably the most expensive choice you'll make when printing your book; make sure you get it right!

Always ask for your book covers to include gloss lamination. Standard paperback cover stock is 10 pt. C1S. A C1S cover means that it is coated on one side for durability and to help the colors "pop" a little more. If your book is on the large side, consider bumping up to a 12 pt. cover for extra durability.

The New Age Of Advertising

by Jay NaPier

100 years is not a very long time considering the age of evolution of civilization.100 years is not very much time considering these giant companies making their fortune and promising you their never ending business empire in coming centuries. Do you think these companies will vanish in near 100 years?

But everything changed regarding business in these 100 years including the MOR Vacations business and solving the problem of aWhere to advertise your MOR Vacations Business\". In fact we never had this fast pace growth in business before in the history of mankind.

It all happened with the invention of print and visual media. At the rate we are growing in the modern world, the distances in the world is shrinking rapidly. With increasing usage of internet and print media the new horizon of business as well as their advertisement is emerging.

Word of mouth advertising is a fairly useless way to advertise now. But it used to be that word of mouth was practically all you needed. You could set up your MOR vacations business near a pleasant resort, and your customers would tell others about it who would then become customers themselves. That was pretty much all you needed to succeed in business then. But today a resort vacation is a glamorous status symbol and if you donat have good advertising, your resort doesnat stand a chance. To keep your head above water in the market today, you need to know where to advertise.

Of course the visual media is the best medium for this. Since most of the people are watching TV many hours a day, the importance of TV can not be neglected. No doubt you have to pay hefty amount to the TV channel but it definitely and promptly enhance your business. Ones you are establish, your business is all up for years to come.

Another type of media is print media, which includes sources like newspapers and magazines. National daily newspapers and major magazines reach millions of readers each day. And often print advertising is actually more visible. TV watchers often tune out of leave the room when commercials start to air, but newspaper and magazine readers donat stop reading when they see an ad. Written ads also sound more credible, and leave a more lasting impression on readers than television ads do.

The Internet cannot be underestimate in its advertising power. More and more people start using the Internet every day, and Internet advertising is relatively inexpensive. Just like with print media, Internet ads last for a longer time period. Posters and billboards are highly visible but donat reach nearly as many people. Radio is another great source for MOR vacations business advertisements. Radio stations are increasing in number and the number of listeners continues to expand. It gives your business good exposure and is also fairly cheap. Your business can also advertise through SMS and conduct surveys about its products through cell phone coverage. However, this is only effective if used simultaneously with advertising in other medias.

Know that MOR businesses donat run on advertising alone. Catchy and attractive ads will attract people for the first time, but you wonat be able to retain them unless they are satisfied with your product. If you have strong advertising backed up with a solid, affordable resort experience, your MOR vacations business is sure to be a success.
